Four activists linked to the RiseUp4Rojava initiative climbed the iconic Brandenburg Gate in Berlin on Monday and unfurled a massive banner reading “For Democracy in Syria” and “Defend Rojava”. The protest highlighted the achievements of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), the Kurdish self-governance in the northern Syrian region of Rojava, as well as Turkey’s ongoing attacks on the area.
“On Wednesday, Turkey’s Islamist militias attacked Manbij (MinbĂ®c) in northern Syria and are now at Kobani’s (KobanĂŞ) gates. The same Kobani where ISIS was defeated in 2015 by the heroic resistance of the YPG and YPJ,” one of the activists said, pointing to the Kurdish forces’ historic victory and their on-going anti-ISIS efforts put in jeopardy by escalating violence.
Condemning attacks of the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA), the activists demanded Germany halt all arms sales to Turkey. “SNA massacres are commanded by Turkey, and Germany profits,” they said.
Furthermore, the German government must formally recognise the Autonomous Administration to pave the way for coexistance in Syria, RiseUp4Rojava said. “We demand recognition of Kurdish self-administration and an end to arms supplies to Turkey. Women-Life-Freedom!”
The protest occurred amid rising international concern over Turkey’s military actions in northern Syria and Germany’s continued arms exports.
