The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) has once again blocked the JinNews website. JinNews correspondent Şirin Çınar said that the reason for the access block to their agency was that their news was causing someone discomfort.
Jinnews was launched on 25 September 2017 and reports in the Kurdish, Turkish, Zazaki, Arabic and English languages. It employs female editors and reporters, and creates woman-oriented reports.
Fifteen media outlets, including Turkey’s first female news agency, JINHA, have been shut down by a decree in law issued on 29 October 2016.
Access to Jinnews was blocked on 1 April upon the decision of Diyarbakir Magistrate’s Office No.4. JinNews correspondent Şirin Çınar said that pressure on journalists has increased in Turkey since the military coup attempt in 2016.
She said that despite all the pressures they started work in 2017 with the motto “On the tracks of truth with a woman’s pen”.
“Our agency has been blocked 43 times since we started. It is women who are suffering the most with the developments in the country. We are faced with these pressures in particular due to our reports on sexual harassment and rape. If you are a female journalist and you write about what a woman has been exposed to, you will be targeted. But whatever happens, we’re not going to stop reporting on women.”
