The Aram Tigran Conservatory, which was established within Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality in 2010, was closed by the appointed trustee in November 2016. Following the closure, the instructors of the conservatory established the MA Music Academy, independent of the municipality. MA Music has been active since 3 March 2017, and with its slogan “Music for Everyone, Music Everywhere” it aims to develop Kurdish music. MA Music, which includes the Women’s Choir, Children’s Choir, the MA Orchestra, and the Natural Rhythm Orchestra, has educated thousands of children and young people over the last four years.
Now the institution is establishing a world first: music training will be provided to unborn babies.
MA Music Academy Coordinator Şêrko Kanîwar describes the process to Mesopotamia News Agency as follows: “We previously wanted to carry out a study, with the participation of parents, on unborn babies and children up to the age of five, but we could not start the project because of the lack of resources”.
They then applied for a support fund from the Goethe Institute in Germany and their project was accepted. They will open a school with the name “Zarok MA” and teach Kurdish music to the unborn and children up to the age of five. Children above the age of five will continue their education in MA Music.
“However the funding does not cover all the technical equipment and other needs, so we have started a campaign to raise more money”, said Kanîwar, who called for support from anyone who likes art and artists.
