Jinwar is a women’s-only village in Rojava, Syria. The construction works of the village were initiated on 10 March 2017 and it formally opened its doors to social life on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
The village is a few miles from Qamishli and mostly Kurdish and Arab women and their children live here collectively. Jinwar was set up by local women’s groups and international volunteers to create a space for women to live free from patriarchal pressure. The houses here were built by the women who are now living as the new residents of this settlement. The life in Jinwar sets an example of an alternative lifestyle in an ecological and communal environment.
