Democratic activists, scholars, and civil society organisations from across Europe will convene in Vienna from 14 to 16 February for the Peoples’ Platform Europe, a transnational event aimed at addressing the continent’s growing political, social, and ecological crises. Organised in collaboration with 14 progressive groups, the event seeks to foster dialogue and strategies around key issues including authoritarianism, militarism, and environmental degradation.

The gathering will feature workshops, panel discussions, and cultural events, focusing on themes such as resisting European militarism, the rise of right-wing nationalism, ecological resistance, and the role of democratic media. Notable speakers include sociologist William I. Robinson, feminist-Marxist scholar Silvia Federici, anti-colonial activist Mireille Fanon Mendès-France, and political theorist John Holloway.
“The event aims to provide a platform for democratic forces and grassroots movements to exchange ideas and develop collective responses to the multifaceted crises of our time,” organisers stated. “In an era marked by rising authoritarianism, social fragmentation, and ecological collapse, solidarity and organised resistance are more crucial than ever.”
Workshops will cover a broad spectrum of topics, from women’s democratic confederalism and youth resistance to self-governance, anti-fascism, and confronting the politics of genocide. Discussions will also examine the impact of global capitalism on conflict zones, including Palestine and Kurdistan, and explore strategies for fostering autonomous, self-sufficient communities.
The programme begins with a panel titled ‘Reclaim the Initiative!’ featuring discussions on global capitalism’s systemic crises and the challenges faced by contemporary social movements. Cultural performances and a concert at Vienna’s Akzent Theatre are also scheduled to highlight the intersection of art and activism.
Peoples’ Platform Europe emerges amid concerns over increasing militarisation within the EU, the normalisation of far-right politics, and growing state repression against dissent. Organisers emphasise the need for cross-border solidarity and participatory democracy as key tools to counter these trends.
The event will conclude with a closed-door session, aiming to solidify networks and outline action plans for sustained collaboration across Europe.
