The Kurds and their representatives within Kurdish political institutions have warmly welcomed the latest message from Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan. The message was made public following a meeting between Öcalan and a political delegation who visited him in Turkey’s Imrali island prison on 28 December.
Kurdish journalist Amed Dicle noted that Öcalan’s message offers a solution rooted in democratisation and equality, presenting an alternative to Turkey’s political deadlock and the escalating crises in the Middle East. Dicle pointed out that the full significance of Öcalan’s message becomes clearer when considering the process of the earlier peace dialogue of 2013 – 2015, along with the roadmap he designed to guide the attempts at resolution.

Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) executive member Refiq Xefur commented that Öcalan’s roadmap will be instrumental in addressing the Kurdish issue in Turkey. “I hope that there will be no obstacle to the continuation of meetings with him,” he said. , Turkey was compelled to allow the meeting due to its difficult economic and military situation after keeping Öcalan in isolation for years, Xefur added.
Sherif Heji Mahmud, interviewed by Hawar News in the northern Syrian town of Qamishli (Qamişlo), said that Öcalan’s eagerly awaited words are a message of peace. “He wants peace for Kurdistan and the whole of the Middle East, Mahmud said. “Öcalan believes that the freedom of the Kurdish people is linked to the freedom of the Turkish people.”
Women’s organisation representative Hevin Kese said that the key to freedom in the Middle East lies with Öcalan, and that peace cannot be achieved as long as the isolation imposed on him continues. “Öcalan does not discriminate between peoples. The solutions he has proposed save us from violence and cruelty. Those who reject Öcalan’s ideas are enemies of society,” she said.
Residents of North and East Syria, which includes the town of Qamishli, govern themselves through the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES)based on the model of democratic confederalism proposed by Öcalan. Its self-governing system is a unique example of ensuring autonomy and representation for all ethnic groups. In recent years, AANES territory has been regularly attaacked by Turkey’s military, with increasing intensity through the last year, and peaking in October.
