On the occasion of the 8 March, Newroz Ehmed, the General Commander of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) shared her evaluations on the women’s resistance in North and East Syria, also known as Rojava and on the upcoming 8 March in a TV broadcast on Sterk TV.
“The spring of the peoples reached by the struggle have blossomed with the colours and the participation of the women,” said Ehmed.
The YPJ commander stated that the women in North and East Syria have been waging an existential struggle of survival.
“The peoples of our region have been subjected to brutal attacks before the eyes of the world. Many international fighters have joined our struggle to defend the ‘resistance of humanity’,” she said.
‘YPJ is a symbol of uniting all struggles’
Ehmed shared her view that the women’s unity achieved by the YPJ was a symbol and inspiration of uniting all struggles.
The reality of the women all around the world is similar to each other. The patriarchal system that we face and the sorrows and the problems we suffer from are the same. Such a unity among women has a special meaning for us,” said the YPJ Commander.
The struggle in Rojava has contributed to the women’s organisation and women’s achievements on earning their rights whilst it has empowered the women to show a courageous stance against all kinds of oppression, according to Ehmed.
“This struggle is now the struggle of all women. It is the struggle of all humanity personified by women,” she said.
Ehmed saluted the 8 March of the women all around the world with the following words:
“The 8th of March is not only a day for women, but for life. It is a feast of existence, it is a feast of being ourselves (‘xwebun’). This is the feast of women to create themselves one more time with their very own struggle. Our mission as the YPJ is to re-construct this day with the participation of all colors of women in life and to struggle for the existence of women and to organise the women.”
