A series of post- election house raids resulted in violent beatings and detentions on Monday in Turkey’s Kurdish majority southeastern province of Hakkari (Colemêrg), Mezopotamya Agency reported.
Special operation police reportedly broke windows and doors during the raid and the detainees suffered beatings, including gun butt strikes, kicks, and punches, before being apprehended.
The Hakkari (Colemêrg) branch of the Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD) issued a written statement regarding the beatings and torture during the raids, and announcing it would follow the legal process, called on Turkish authorities to hold an effective investigation into the incidents.
ÖHD stressed that a forensic examination report confirmed statements made by a detainee, Mustafa Bor, and his family, that Bor was locked in a room of the house by two security officers and tortured for two hours.
During the early hours of Monday in Batman (Êlih), at least 20 opposition supporters were arrested for making a ‘victory’ hand sign associated with pro-Kurdish parties towards a crowd celebrating President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s apparent win in Sunday’s presidential run-off, reported Duvar.
A journalist, Vedat Aker, was also arrested for reporting on the 20 arrests, according to Duvar.
