The United Nations Security Council condemned the deadly 20 July attack in Duhok province of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).
In a statement issued by Council President Ronaldo Costa Filho, it said:
“The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attack in Dohuk province of Iraq on 20 July 2022. The attack resulted in at least nine civilian deaths, including children. The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of Iraq and the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, wished a speedy and full recovery to those who were injured, and expressed their support for the Iraqi authorities in their investigations. The members of the Security Council urged all Member States to cooperate actively with the Government of Iraq and all other relevant authorities in support of these investigations.”
The statement stressed the Council’s support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Iraq, saying:
“The members of the Security Council reiterated their support for the independence, sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, democratic process and prosperity of Iraq.”
Welcoming the Council’s statement, the Iraqi foreign ministry spokesperson Ahmed Al-Sahaf told the Iraqi News Agency (INA):
“The statement of the Security Council that condemned the attack on Iraq’s sovereignty is the first of its kind in the context of a series of Turkish violations against Iraq’s sovereignty and security.”
He added: “The content of the statement supports Iraq’s stance and places the procedure for considering an attack against the national sovereignty in a new context”
