Turkish journalist Fatih Altaylı has stirred debate with his candid remarks on the use of F-16 fighter jets, questioning their value if not deployable against Kurds and Greeks.
These comments, made in a 29 January YouTube interview, have highlighted concerns over Turkey’s military intentions, amidst the US’ green light of the $23 billion F-16 sale to Turkey, subject to Congressional approval.
Altaylı, a prominent figure in Turkish media, underscored a contentious aspect of Turkey’s defence strategy, drawing attention to the conditions attached to the F-16 deal. These stipulations, as highlighted, reportedly prevent the jets’ use in the Aegean against Greece, and in northern Syria and northern Iraq, raising questions for Altaylı about their operational deployment.
The journalist’s statements have prompted reactions, with some appreciating his forthrightness and others scrutinising the underlying motives behind Turkey’s F-16 acquisition. Critics argue that such remarks expose an intent focused on regional dominance, particularly over Kurdish and Greek territories.
The US government’s sanction of the F-16 sale, following Turkey’s ratification of Sweden’s NATO membership, comes amidst deliberations over the jets’ impact on Kurdish regions. Congressional figures have voiced concerns over Turkey’s military operations in these areas, fearing regional destabilisation and adverse effects on ethnic and religious minorities.
