Allegations of election tampering have surfaced in the Kurdish majority southeastern Şırnak (Şirnex) province of Turkey, with pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy (DEM Party) spokeswoman Ayşegül Doğan stating that the will of the people is being openly violated.
Footage from a school in downtown Şırnak records clear breaches of election law, according to Doğan, who highlighted the import of 5,900 voters, none of whom are from Şırnak, to cast ballots at 17 different polling stations.
This incident, described by Doğan as a blatant violation of political ethics and democratic governance, involves a total of at least 46,901 transported voters in Kurdish regions and several instances of duplicate voting.
“All the country’s eyes are being brazenly violated, a clear crime is being committed,” she said, emphasising that this issue transcends the interests of the DEM Party alone and poses a significant threat to democracy itself.
Doğan urged other political parties to acknowledge their responsibility in protecting the democratic process, stating, “If today is the day to stand up for democracy, then protecting these people’s votes is paramount.”
