The Turkish Constitutional Court (AYM) decided on Thursday to discuss the request of the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office to block the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party’s (HDP) treasury aid accounts on 5 January 2023.
The AYM requested information and documents from the Prosecutor’s Office regarding the allegation that “the HDP’s organic ties to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) continue throughout the trial process.” These documents will be decisive in the ruling.
If the AYM approves the Prosecutor’s Office’s request, the HDP will not be able to use the treasury aid it is due to receive in 2023.
The Chief Public Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Bekir Şahin, had previously applied to the AYM demanding that the HDP’s accounts with treasury aid be blocked “immediately”. The Constitutional Court is expected to decide on this request at the oral hearing on 10 January.
The AYM in June 2021 accepted an indictment that demanded the closing of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) as well as a political ban for nearly 500 HDP members, including high-profile figures over alleged ties to the PKK.
