Turkey’s pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) has condemned a fatal drone strike carried out by Turkish forces on Tuesday that targeted officials from the Kurdish-led autonomous administration of North and East Syria.
The HDP called on the international community to take immediate action to halt what they called “targeted assassinations”, stressing that the attack occurred in plain view of the global community.
The party described the incident as part of a series of murders aimed at undermining the democratic will of the people in the Kurdish-led northern region of Syria.
Two civilian administrators from the Kurdish-led Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) were killed in the Turkish drone strike, Qamishli Canton Co-chair Yusra Derwêş and Deputy Co-chair Lîman Şiwêş. The driver of the targeted vehicle, Firat Tûma was also killed and another official was severely wounded.
Turkey’s military actions against the Kurdish-controlled regions in northern Syria have recently escalated. In the past week alone, Turkish airstrikes have killed civilians, Syrian government soldiers, a Russian soldier, and several Kurdish fighters. The Kurdish-led administration in northeastern Syria has also condemned Turkey’s military escalation in the region.
