An indictment was prepared within the scope of the “Kobanê investigation” eight days after the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) called for the “immediate release” of former Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş on 22 December.
The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office issued an arrest warrant on 20 September 2019 for 27 politicians from the HDP Central Executive Board (MYK), including Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ.
The indictment, which after 15 months was speedily prepared within eight days of the ECHR verdict, emphasised that the tweets posted by the party’s executive board regarding the 6-8 October Kobanê investigation were peaceful.
The decision of the ECHR Grand Chamber on Demirtaş affects all imprisoned HDP politicians.
Ruken Gülağacı, the lawyer of Figen Yüksekdağ, told the Mesopotamia Agency (MA) that the decision given by the Court must be immediately implemented, otherwise membership of Turkey in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) may be suspended.
