The Turkish Armed Forces launched a new air-and-ground campaign on Friday 23 April in Iraqi Kurdistan. Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) zones mainly covering the Zap, Avaşin, Basyan, Qandil and Gara regions, mainly in the Metina region, also known as “Medya Defence Zones”.
Fifty fighter jets dropped bombs on PKK targets, the Turkish Ministry of Defence announced. The People’s Defence Forces (HPG) issued a new statement regarding the ongoing status of the clashes, ANF reports.
According to the statement, the ‘Bazên Zagrose revolutionary action’ – the announced name of the Kurdish fighters’ counter campaign in the Zap region against the ongoing Turkish military operations – continues with fierce clashes in the Avaşin and Zap regions.
The HPG announced that at least 14 Turkish soldiers had lost their lives within last 48 hours. Turkish fighter jets, meanwhile, reportedly continued to bomb several zones in Zap and Avaşin regions on 27 April. The HPG stated that no Kurdish fighters lost their lives during these bombings.
