Turkey carried out 42 drone strikes in Kurdish-controlled north and east Syria between 23 June 2020 and 29 July 2022, hitting civilians, schools, hospitals, local councils, dwellings and vehicles as well as military bases, councils and security centres.

The strikes occurred in areas controlled by Russia and the US-led Global Coalition against ISIS, daily Özgür Politika reported.

Russia has controlled the border region between Tell Abyad (Girê Spî) and Manbij since 2019, and the Global Coalition controls Syria’s Jazira region. Both these major players in the war-torn country have agreed to respect the airspace and territory the other controls, leaving no room for Turkish aircraft to fly over north and east Syria without the knowledge of either Russia or the United States.

Turkish forces have carried out at least 38 attacks since the beginning of 2022, killing at least 27 people, including two children and nine women, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
