In a statement on Friday marking the twelfth anniversary of the Rojava Revolution, the Central Executive Committee of Turkey’s Peoples’ Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party lauded the efforts of Kurds, women, youth, and international allies who led the historic struggle against the tyranny of the Islamic State (ISIS). The party highlighted the revolution’s unique achievement in promoting women’s liberation and creating a model of democratic co-existence in the Middle East, emphasising the need for continued support and resistance against ongoing attacks.
The DEM Party’s statement emphasised the revolution’s significance beyond regional boundaries, portraying it as a global symbol of resistance against oppression. “The Rojava Revolution is not just a revolution that took place in a small part of the world and is based on the achievements of only one people; it is first of all a revolution carried out by women against those who try to enslave women with brutal methods and sell them in the markets,” the statement read. “The Rojava Revolution, led by women, is a revolution in which Kurds, Arabs, Turkmens, Muslims, Christians, Alevis, and Yazidis resist together for their own future, pay the price and decide their own future.”
Despite these achievements, the party expressed concern over the continuous threats faced by the revolution from forces unable to accept ISIS’s defeat. The statement pointed out that these adversaries are now seeking to undermine the revolution by aligning with the Syrian regime, aiming to dismantle Kurdish gains and the democratic model established in Rojava. “Those who attacked Rojava are now trying to establish a dialogue with the Syrian regime, to which they considered all kinds of insults as permissible yesterday, with the aim of denying and destroying the Kurds and liquidating the revolution in the region,” the statement warned.
The DEM Party called for international solidarity to protect the revolution and its ideals. “Attacking the Rojava Revolution and remaining insensitive to these attacks is a crime. It is our fundamental responsibility to protect this revolution, which was led by women and given to the whole world,” the statement urged. It also highlighted the success of the revolution in providing a third option for the Syrian people amidst the civil war, showcasing coexistence and equal life based on democratic foundations.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to the revolution, vowing to continue the struggle for recognition, support, and expansion of its principles. “All sensitive groups, especially our people, will continue their struggle to accept, support and expand the Rojava Revolution. The people who resist under the leadership of women achieved success yesterday and will achieve greater success tomorrow,” the statement concluded.
