Tülay Hatimoğulları, co-chair of Turkey’s pro-Kurdish Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party, strongly criticised the Turkish government’s policies regarding Syria during a group meeting. She emphasised the importance of recognition of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria and advocated for making peace with the Kurds.
Hatimoğulları highlighted the urgent need for the government to resolve the longstanding crisis with Syria and argued that this approach is essential to addressing numerous multifaceted issues in Turkey, including tensions regarding refugees and economic problems.
“Turkey must officially engage in dialogue with Syria. It must also engage with Assad [referring to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad]. But when these talks happen, they must be conducted in consultation with the will of the Kurdish people there,” she said.
“The genuine path to agreement lies in resolving the Kurdish issue through peaceful and democratic means, passing through Qamişlo and Kobanê,” added the politician.
Hatimoğulları’s statements reflect a firm stance on Turkey’s foreign policy approach towards Syria and the Kurds, advocating diplomatic engagement and democratic solutions to longstanding conflicts.
