Turkey has reached an important crossroads ahead of the 14 May polls in which democratic and progressive groups have a chance to defeat the Turkish government, a committee of the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) said on Saturday.
“First of all, we would like to remind you that the elections that will take place on 14 May in Kurdistan and Turkey are very important. But we do not believe that elections are the solution to everything. Such an approach would lead to big mistakes,” the Peoples’ and Religious Affairs Committee of the KCK told Fırat News Agency in an interview.
The polls are critical for the struggle of cultural rights, for the equality of communities living in Turkey and for the women’s rights struggle, as well as for the youth and for labourers, the committee said.
“In this sense, with the electoral process, Turkey has reached an critical juncture. The struggle of the freedom movement, women, the youth, the labourers and democratic circles have brought the fascist regime to the brink of collapse,” it added.
The people of Turkey will deal the current government a death blow on 14 May, the committee said, calling all Kurds to vote for the left wing Labour and Freedom Alliance and the Green Left Party, which is fielding the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) parliamentary candidates for the forthcoming polls, with the party being under threat of closure.
The KCK’s committee told voters that “it is necessary to rally around the Green Left Party, which represents the peoples, women, the youth and religious identities, organises itself for the struggle for democracy and freedom and formulates its political programme and guidelines accordingly, working on this basis”.
