An armed assault on the office of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) took place in the Marmaris district of Turkey’s western city of Muğla. A suspect, carrying a gun allegedly used in the assault, was detained at the crime scene immediately after the assault.
The assault took place early in the morning. The police detained A.T.D. right after the incident: he was reportedly carrying a gun that allegedly was used in the assault. According to a report by MA, the assailant, who had been prosecuted in 2018 for damaging the property of the HDP, arrived at the scene of the incident by taxi.
Güven Göknar, speaking to MA, stated that the assault took place around 6 am, and the assailant fired at the building with a pump action shotgun, using four cartridges. “The windows of the office were shattered during the assault. Furniture and other articles inside were damaged. The assailant has been detained at the scene,” he said.
Göknar also reacted to the circulation of information that the assailant was psychologically unstable. “This is a planned assault,” he stated, and he accused the officials who have been criminalising the HDP. A group of HDP representatives including Murat Çepni (MP for Izmir) and party executives Emin Orhan, Mahfuz Güleryüz and Berna Çelik are expected to arrive in Marmaris today.
