Thousands of Amedspor Football Club fans transformed Diyarbakır’s (Amed) Tahir Elçi Stadium into a sea of purple on Tuesday, marking International Women’s Day with a powerful display of solidarity. The crowd unveiled an elaborate choreography featuring a woman holding the globe, accompanied by banners reading, “Women will liberate the world,” and “Our fight isn’t over—together we will stop violence.” The performance was met with roaring applause as supporters chanted “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” (Women, Life, Freedom).
The Turkish first-league match against Gençlerbirliği kicked off with players carrying a banner stating, “Women bring peace to spring, they nurture freedom.” Despite the cold, fans filled the stands, joined by Amedspor president Burç Baysal and Diyarbakır’s co-mayors Serra Bucak and Doğan Hatun, who were warmly received by the crowd.
On the pitch, Amedspor dominated early, but Yenshlerbelee took the lead through Amilton’s 41st-minute goal. Amedspor equalised in the second half when Yuhann Cassubie’s powerful strike found the net. Despite relentless pressure, the match ended 1-1.
Beyond football, the evening was a testament to women’s resistance, with fans using the occasion to highlight the ongoing struggle against gender-based violence and inequality.
