To celebrate imprisoned Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan’s birthday, the Vigil for Öcalan campaign has announced the third installation of Global Öcalan Book Day, set for 4 April. The organisers of the campaign invite all to seek inspiration from the Kurdish leader’s texts, and to share them widely on this day, which will fall just over a month since Öcalan made a historical declaration for the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) to dissolve itself. The historical significance of this declaration makes his ideas especially relevant now, which the campaign seeks to capitalise on.
“This initiative aims to disseminate his works and unite different collectives and campaigns. This day and action proposal are dedicated to discussing and sharing Öcalan’s writings in order to strengthen our commitment for his liberation and the political solution for Kurdistan,” the organisers stated. In prior editions of the campaign, more than 100 cities in over 40 countries have participated, demonstrating the reach of Öcalan’s ideas despite his confinement in Imrali prison.
The campaign organisers called on all sectors of society to participate, including activists, students, workers, academics, trade unions, and environmentalists, especially women and youth. This campaign is intended to spread the vision of Öcalan until his physical freedom can be achieved, while the spread of his thought itself contributes to the campaign for his freedom.
