The legal fees for the lawyer representing the police officer Yakup S. who is accused killing the Kurdish student Kemal Kurkut will be paid for by the Ministry of Interior.
During the Newroz celebration in Diyarbakır, Kemal Kurkut, a university student, was shot and killed by the police upon an allegation of a “suspicion of a being a suicide bomber” at the search and entry point.
Yakup S., was acquitted on 17 November 2020 by Diyarbakır 7th High Criminal Court of the case where he was tried for the “deliberate murder” of Kurkut.
It was revealed that police Yakup S., applied to the General Directorate of Security for the payment of the attorney’s fee while the trial was ongoing.
The policeman demanded the payment of his lawyer’s fee based on the provision that the fee of the lawyer assigned to the police will be paid for from the budget of the General Directorate of Security.
