Journalists gathered in front of the UN offices in the northern Syrian city of Qamishlo on Thursday to condemn a Turkish drone strike that killed a media worker and injured a reporter.
The drone strikes aim to silence those documenting Turkey’s “crimes and violations”, Free Journalists Union (YRA) Co-chair Dilyar Jezeiri said.
Driver Necmedîn Faysal Hecî Sînan lost his life and reporter Delila Agît, both working for the women-focused local Jin TV, was injured in a drone strike on Wednesday that targeted their vehicle on the road between Qamishlo and Amude, some 15 km from the Turkish border.
Turkey’s drone strikes are in “blatant violation” of international conventions, Jezeiri added.
According to an earlier statement by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), Turkish drones have killed at least six journalists in 2023.
Turkey’s “repeated attacks against journalists and civilians” must be stopped, Jezeiri said.
