On International Women’s Day, Swiss female deputies shared solidarity and freedom video messages in support of jailed Kurdish politician Gültan Kışanak.
Having served as a lawmaker in the Turkish Assembly for two terms, Gültan Kışanak, a prominent Kurdish politican, author and journalist, was jailed on “terrorism charges” on 21 October 2016 during her time as Diyarbakır Metropolitan co-mayor for the Democratic Regions Party (DBP).
She has been a long-term activist in the Kurdish women’s movement while working as a journalist for 13 years and published articles focusing on the Kurdish question and women’s rights.
Kışanak wrote a book in 2018, titled “The Purple Colour of Kurdish Politics” (“Kürt Siyasetinin Mor Rengi” in Turkish) which focuses on the women’s struggle in political parties in Turkey.
Kışanak continues to work on her literary and journalistic projects in the Kocaeli Kandıra No.1 F-type High Security Prison in Turkey and letters with her can be shared through this mailing address.
Kışanak was previously incacerated in the notorious Diyarbakır (Amed) prison for two years as a student after the military coup in 1980.
