Sweden’s NATO membership is nearing reality after the Turkish parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee approved it on Tuesday.
Key parties such as the ruling coalition comprising the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), along with the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), supported the motion. The bill is now poised to advance to the General Assembly, where its approval seems likely, reflecting the committee’s majority support.
The bill, titled “Protocol on the Accession of the Kingdom of Sweden to NATO,” was passed by a majority vote in the committee. Pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) abstained, while the nationalist Good Party (İYİ Party) and the Islamist Felicity Party (SP) voted against it.
The committee session also addressed 10 other legislative proposals concerning international agreements.
The bill is now expected to proceed to the General Assembly, where approval is anticipated given the majority support indicated in the committee vote.
