Rojava: YPG spokesperson criticizes the US and Russia for lack of reaction to Turkish airstrikes

Nuri Mehmûd from the YPG says fighter jets and other weapons used in the Turkish airstrikes in Rojava are hi-tech NATO equipment, and the international community tends to favour either Turkey or Iran by its resolutions.

The spokesperson for the People’s Protection Units (YPG) criticized the United States and Russia for remaining silent about the recent airstrikes by Turkey in North and East Syria.

Speaking to Fırat News Agency, Nuri Mehmûd emphasized that a new democratic project was in the process of being realised in the region, and this was perceived as a ‘threat’ by Turkey, which has always considered the existence, identity and culture of other peoples, especially the Kurds, a danger to its own existence.

Pointing out that the United States and Russia remained silent about the recent air strikes by Turkey, Mehmûd added that Turkey had adopted a strategy of exporting armed gangs to the world and used this to blackmail the European countries.

He also underlined that the fighter jets and other weapons being used in the airstrikes were advanced NATO technology.

“The Turkish government is not concerned about human rights, the ecology or the pandemic,” he noted. “They’re just trying to dominate and subdue, wherever they can. Their objective is to create a ruthless empire.”

Mehmûd indicated that a land equal to one third of Syria had been liberated by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the YPG, and 40% of the peoples in Syria were currently living in a state of stability in this region.

“And yet, the resolutions by the international community favour either Turkey or Iran. The Bab al-Hawa border crossing is opened, or the parts under the regime rule that receive support from the Mediterranean, but there is an embargo on the parts under our control,” he said.

Mehmûd stated that democratic relations between Turkey and the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) would serve the interests of everyone, and this was actually an issue of international concern.

The YPG, formed during the Syrian civil war by the Kurds for self-defence in the northern and eastern regions of the country, constituted a major fighting force within the SDF which fought against and defeated the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria with the air, logistics and intelligence support of the US.
