Being a Kurdish journalist brings a lot of risks, including risk of imprisonment, torture or in some cases even death if you are working in the conflict zones. Deniz Firat is among those brave journalists who followed the truth despite all of these risks.
Deniz Firat was working for the Kurdish News Agency, Firat News, as a correspondent covering the conflict in North Syria and Iraqi Kurdistan when an armed attack by ISIS killed her on 8 August 2014.
Deniz was a passionate journalist and was working in the conflict zones despite all of the risks and died while following the attacks of ISIS against the UN protected Makhmour Refugee Camp.
The Free Women’s Press RAJIN commemorated the Kurdish journalist, Deniz Fırat who died 7 years ago

In their press release, RAJIN stated the following:
“Therefore, women who want to report the truth should follow the footsteps of Deniz and others like her. Heval Deniz has put her life in danger in the most difficult areas of the struggle. Today, the Kurdish women’s media is developed and matured because of the efforts of these martyrs. Based on the memory and work of Ersöz, Deniz, Nujiyan, Sarye, Şilan and dozens of other women, we organise to be the voice of every woman who is resisting. As those who follow in the footsteps of our press martyrs, we fight to reveal the truth in the darkness.”
Deniz Fırat was also commemorated at her grave in the Çaldiran district of Van. Mesopotamian Women Journalists Platform (MKGP), Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG), Dicle Fırat’s journalist friends and her family all attended the commemoration, MA reported.
