Survivors of the 6 February earthquakes in Turkey’s Hatay province marched on Thursday, which marked the second month of the calamity, to draw attention to the harsh conditions persisting in the disaster areas and to call for those responsible for the devastation to be held accountable.
The demonstration, organised by the Hatay Earthquake Solidarity platform in the Samandağ district of the historical city, included the banner “We will rebuild this city with bricks of love”, as the participants, including members of NGOs and local quake survivors, rallied with slogans of “No silence until those responsible pay”, “Negligence kills, not earthquakes” and “Organised people cannot be defeated”.
The twin earthquakes killed 50,399 people in Turkey’s south and southeast provinces, though the number of deaths may still increase since the identification works continue, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu announced on Wednesday.
