The General Assembly of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) from northern Syria wants to ensure freedom for jailed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan, and vowed to increase efforts in a written statement on the occasion of Öcalan’s birthday.
Pointing to the PKK leader’s impact this century, the PYD said that Öcalan’s ideas and philosophy preserves human values and social-cultural thought, and directs society towards justice, equality, democracy and freedom.
The party said that Öcalan’s birthday is a day of resistance for all peoples, towards freedoms that go beyond even the liberation of women and the freedom of the Kurdish people.
“Öcalan’s intuitions for the future will enable the solution of every problem in the Middle East, including the women’s issue. Öcalan is the founder of the philosophy of Jin, Jiyan, Azadi, which today resonates all over the world. The ideology of freedom represented in Rojava, northeast Syria, has become a focal point for the whole world,” said the PYD.
Öcalan has been serving a life sentence in the İmralı Island Prison in northwestern Turkey since his capture and trial in 1999 and the Turkish government has been imposing absolute isolation on Öcalan for two years, casting doubts on his health.
