Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of Iraqi Kurdistan’s Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), held discussions with Elizabeth Richard, the US State Department’s Counter-Terrorism Coordinator, in Washington DC on Tuesday.
According to PUKMedia, the meeting focused on the security situation in the region, counter-terrorism efforts, and continued military and intelligence collaboration.
Talabani praised the significant role of the international coalition forces, particularly the United States, in enhancing the military and intelligence capabilities of the Kurdistan Region. “Continued cooperation and expansion of coordination are important factors to combat the remnants of terrorism and to guarantee stability in the region,” he stated, referring to the ongoing threat of Islamic State.
The discussions also covered the protection of civilian lives and the importance of sustained coordination between forces of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Iraq and the US to eradicate this threat. President Talabani highlighted the ongoing risks posed by ISIS activities, emphasising that overlooking these threats could destabilise the region and endanger lives.
This visit comes at a critical juncture for Kurdish regional politics, with contrasting diplomatic engagements by Kurdish leaders. While Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), has been in Tehran possibly seeking support for postponement of the coming parliamentary elections, Talabani’s US visit underscored the PUK’s insistence on proceeding with the elections as scheduled.
Furthermore, Talabani’s agenda in Washington included meetings with US Congress representatives and various research centres to discuss not only the election timeline but also broader issues affecting the KRI and its relations with neighbouring countries, including Turkey, which has been targeting both the Duhok (Duhoq) region and the PUK militarily, accusing them of supporting the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
