Baran Gül, who is currently detained in Maraş Türkoğlu No.1 L-Type Closed Prison in Turkey, revealed the violations of rights prisoners experienced in a phone call he made to his family.
Mesopotamia Agency (MA) has reported that Gül stated that the ward in which prisoners are currently engaged in a hunger strike in, was raided by prison guards and the prisoners were violently assaulted. The prisoners have been on hunger strike, demanding an end to the prison isolation conditions of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. The hunger strike has also demanded an end to the harsh violations of rights that are taking place in prisons across Turkey.
Hunger strikers brutally assaulted
Gül stated that four prisoners were on hunger strike with him and they were all brutally assaulted: “We were brutally beaten by the guards who came to the C-5 ward. My arm is broken. There were marks of injuries on my other friends’ bodies. We were battered and threatened”.
Gül’s older brother Mahsun Gül stated that his brother’s lawyer filed a criminal complaint against the prison guards. “We do not have clear information about his situation. We do not know whether he was taken to the doctor or not. But we know that his life was in danger. We demand that they are medically treated if they have injuries and their demands must be accepted. We demand an end to mistreatment in prisons”, he said.
