Yesterday, 3 February, U.S. President Joe Biden announced in a press conference that Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, the leader of ISIS, was killed in an operation on a compound in Turkish controlled Idlib, a province in NW Syria controlled by the jihadist group Tahrir al-Sham, and notable for the dozens of Turkish military posts scattered around the area.
He shared details of the airborne helicopter operation by US Special Forces at a housing compound near the village of Atme (Āţimah) in Idlib near the Turkish border.
Biden said that the ISIS leader was responsible for the attack on the prison in Haseke in NE Syria holding ISIS fighters which he said ‘Was swiftly addressed by our brave partners of the Syrian Democratic Forces’.
Announcing the killing of ISIS’s new leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, Biden said at a news conference:
* I am grateful for the immense courage, skill and determination of our U.S. forces who skilfully executed this incredibly challenging mission.
* The members of our military are the solid-steel backbone of this nation, ready to fly into danger at a moment’s notice to keep our country and the American people safe, as well as our Allies
* We are also aided by the “essential partnership” of the Syrian Democratic Forces.
* We will continue working with our close allies and partners — the Syrian Democratic Forces; the Iraqi Security Forces, including the Kurdish Peshmerga; and the more than 80 members of the global coalition — to keep pressure on ISIS, to protect our homeland
