Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) executive committee member Murat Karayılan has accused the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the ruling party in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), of actively cooperating with Turkey in its ongoing assaults against Kurdish guerillas in the Zap region of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, emphasising that the KRG’s actions have been aiding Turkey’s efforts in the conflict.
Speaking to Sterk TV, Karayılan stressed the significance of this ongoing struggle in both the history of the PKK movement and the broader history of the Kurdish people. He noted that the continuous resistance in the last three years in the Zap region is unprecedented in the annals of Kurdish history.
Karayılan underscored the guerrillas’ achievements despite facing an adversary equipped with some of the most advanced technological weaponry of the time. However, his strongest accusations were aimed at Turkey, labelling the Turkish government’s military operations in the region war crimes.
The PKK executive also raised the issue of concealed losses on the Turkish side, claiming that although the Turkish armed forces avoid admitting their casualties, the losses are evident and being hidden from the public.
Expressing concern over the collaboration between the KDP and Turkish forces, Karayılan warned that such a partnership could pose significant dangers to the Kurdish cause. He criticised the KDP’s Peshmerga forces for their actions in guerrilla territories, describing them as irresponsible and potentially disruptive to the unity of the Kurdish resistance.
Addressing KDP leader Masoud Barzani directly, Karayılan cautioned that the KDP’s alignment with Turkey could result in adverse consequences for the Kurdish people. He urged the KDP to reconsider its support for Turkey and called on Barzani to recognise the vital role that the PKK plays in safeguarding Kurdish interests.
Karayılan concluded by rallying the entire Kurdish population across Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Iran to unite under a common cause. He expressed confidence that with strategic planning and a united front, the Kurds could overcome any challenges and continue to strive for freedom in their homeland.
