North and East Syria commenced its Newroz celebrations, a symbol of renewal and resistance, with the Democratic Autonomous Administration (AANES) announcing a holiday for official institutions on 20 and 21 March.
The Euphrates Canton’s Events Committee revealed a series of events leading up to the central celebration in Kobani (Kobanê) on 21 March. Majda Hassoun, a committee member, highlighted the significance of the day, noting the participation of various artistic groups and the day-long celebration.
In Manbij (Minbic) Canton, the festivities began with the lighting of the Newroz flame on Touq al-Khalil Mountain, under the slogan ‘Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan, A Political Solution to the Kurdish Issue’. The event saw hundreds from the diverse community of Manbij, including Kurds, Arabs and Armenians, donning traditional attire. The Newroz flame was lit by mothers of those who have lost their lives in defence of their lands, accompanied by popular songs and messages of hope and resistance.
This year’s Newroz celebrations in NE Syria are more than cultural events; they represent a unified call for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan and a peaceful resolution to the Kurdish issue.
