Nikolai Vilumsen, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), has expressed concern over the current state of affairs in Turkey and called for action against Erdoğan’s government, arguing that the People’s Alliance led by Erdoğan poses a threat to everyone and highlighting the need for Europe to reassess its support.
In an interview with ANHA, Vilumsen pointed out that Turkey is going through a dark stage, particularly due to Erdoğan’s collaboration with extremist Islamists against the democratic revolution in North and East Syria. Vilumsen warned that this cooperation will have harmful consequences for all parties involved.
Regarding the recent parliamentary and presidential elections in Turkey and northern Kurdistan, Vilumsen criticised the lack of fairness in the electoral process. Despite significant pre-election pressure, including the arrest of opposition MPs and the suppression of media outlets, the results surprised Vilumsen. He acknowledged the courage of the Turkish people in the face of such challenges, with substantial support for opposition candidates and the pro-Kurdish Green Left Party in the Kurdish-majority regions.
Vilumsen emphasised that Erdoğan’s government poses a danger to all peoples in Turkey. He argued that Erdoğan’s main objective is to amass wealth for himself and his inner circle, resulting in continued repression of trade unionists, feminists, and minorities. Vilumsen believes that Erdoğan will go to great lengths to maintain power, which will harm both the Kurdish population and Turkey as a whole.
Furthermore, Vilumsen raised concerns about Erdoğan’s new cross-border military operation plans in North and East Syria. Turkey’s violation of international law through the occupation of Syrian regions and its cooperation with extremist Islamists against the pro-democracy revolution in the area are alarming, says Vilumsen, warning that such actions could lead to the resurgence of the Islamic State (ISIS), posing a danger not only to the region but also to the international community.
In light of these concerns, Vilumsen called on the European Union to reconsider its support for Erdoğan’s government. He argued that Erdoğan’s true nature and his disregard for international laws, including sanctions against Putin, are well known. Vilumsen asserted that clear consequences must follow, urging Europe to take necessary measures and cease support for Erdoğan.
