The death toll continues to rise 72 hours after the earthquake hit southeast Turkey and northern Syria on Monday. As earthquake survivors begin to lose hope, the Turkish government’s social media restriction draws nationwide backlash.
As of Wednesday, Northern Syrian cities Afrin and Idlib had received no international support after Monday’s earthquakes, according to Syrian news agency North Press.
The World Health Organisation expects earthquakes in Turkey and Syria to affect 23 million people, and kill up to 20,000. There are still areas that have received little to no aid or rescue teams in Turkey, but a WHO official said that Syria was in an even more extreme state after nearly 12 years of protracted complex crisis.
The chairman of the Chamber of Geological Engineers in Turkey said that they repeatedly warned Turkish authorities about potential disasters, but the government took no action.
