Turkish attacks against North and East Syria have been on the increase in recent days, with the weekend seeing drone strikes targeting a leader of the region’s Christian minority, as well as a prominent Christian poet.
Turkey has been benefiting from the West’s focus on the Ukrainian conflict to use its Bayraktar drones against the autonomous, Kurdish-led regions, analyst Fehim Taştekin has said.
Meanwhile, domestic acts of repression have targeted Kurds seeking to celebrate the birthday of imprisoned political leader Abdullah Öcalan, as well as to prevent residents of a Kurdish city from flying balloons, holding drama performances or putting up stickers.
