The Iraqi military operation against the Yazidi homeland of Sinjar has reached new heights, with shelling and clashes breaking out in earnest on Monday 2 May as federal forces appeared to be moving to reassert control over the region.
Tensions continued throughout northern Iraq and the neighbouring Kurdish regions, with a rocket attack targeting an oil refinery in the capital city of Erbil, while an Australian MP called on his government to act on Turkey’s ongoing military operations in the north of the country.
