Turkey’s military operations in Northern Iraq continue to arouse public anger, with protests across three continents following the latest allegations that Turkey has been using banned chemical weapons. But since Kurds have no state of their own, they will struggle to force the international Organisation for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons to take their claims seriously, a German analyst has said.
Meanwhile, the Turkish Foreign Minister has courted controversy by making a well-known racist hand gesture at a group of Armenians protesting Turkey’s 1915 genocide of the Christian minority group, while the Turkish Constitutional Court has doubled down on the decision to ‘ban’ the letter W from a Kurdish child’s name on the basis it appears only in the Kurdish, not the Turkish, alphabet.
