Historic genocides against the Kurds and the Yezidi minority have been commemorated across the region. 14 April marked the anniversary of the Anfal campaign which saw up to 180,000 Kurds slaughtered in Iraqi Kurdistan, while speakers at a panel discussion on ISIS’ 2014 genocide of the Yezidis indicated that many survivors remain in captivity in Turkey.
Meanwhile, the top court in Turkey has ruled in favour of a Kurd who survived an attempted lynching, in a demonstration of the continued threat faced by regional minorities. More positive news came from the UK, where delegates at a major trade union event lent their support to the Kurdish cause and to imprisoned Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan.
