A delegation from the Kyrgyz Republic, led by Bakit Kadyrov of the Foreign Ministry, recently visited North and East Syria, culminating in the repatriation of Kyrgyz citizens previously intertwined with the Islamic State (ISIS)-affiliated families.
The delegation was warmly received by officials including Rubel Baho, Deputy Co-chair of the Department of Foreign Relations, Khaled Ibrahim from the Administrative Board, and Lana Hussein, representing the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ).
During the discussions, Rubel Baho highlighted the adverse effects of Turkish military actions on the region, emphasising the systematic destruction and displacement of millions, which he stated were in violation of international laws such as the Geneva Convention. Baho also noted that these actions not only destabilise the region but also hinder the ongoing efforts against ISIS, potentially allowing the group to regroup and launch new attacks.
Bakit Kadyrov, on behalf of the Kyrgyz delegation, acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Autonomous Administration and the Syrian Democratic Forces in combating ISIS. He expressed gratitude for their assistance in the complex process of repatriating Kyrgyz citizens amid the challenging circumstances faced by the region.
The visit marked a pivotal moment with the handover of 72 children and 27 women associated with ISIS families to the Kyrgyz Republic.
This act not only symbolises a step towards resolving the lingering issues of foreign nationals involved with ISIS but also underscores the collaborative spirit between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES) in addressing humanitarian concerns and contributing to regional stability.
