The vibrant and eagerly awaited Kurdistan Cultural Week returns to Brussels for its eighth edition from 15 to 18 August 2024. This year’s festivities will once again bring the rich traditions and culture of Kurdistan to the heart of Europe, offering a unique and colourful experience for locals and visitors alike.
The festivities kick off on 15 August with a lively folkloric march through the streets around Boulevard Anspach, starting at 13:00 from Place de la Bourse. This parade, with its traditional Kurdish costumes, music and dance, reminiscent of a Kurdish carnival, aims to set the tone for the following days.
Spanjeplan – Place D’Espagne will be the main venue for the event, where visitors can enjoy a range of cultural activities. The programme will include traditional Kurdish music performances by groups such as JORDA, 133 Wav, 4 Sterk and Çarnewa, as well as solo musicians. Visitors will experience traditional Kurdish instruments such as the Erbanê, Kemençe and Def û Zûrne, as well as the unique vocal artistry of the Dengbêjî singers. The festival will also include a fusion of Belgian and Latin American music, film screenings, theatre performances and exhibitions.
Food lovers will have the opportunity to sample a variety of Kurdish dishes, offering a taste of the region’s rich culinary heritage. The event will also feature a symbolic Kurdish village set up in Spanish Square, providing further opportunities for visitors to immerse themselves in Kurdish culture.
Last year’s edition of Kurdistan Cultural Week received enthusiastic support from the people of Brussels, reflecting the deep respect and appreciation for the Kurdish community in Belgium. The festival, which began with a vibrant Kurdish parade, successfully introduced Europe to the diverse cultural heritage of Kurdistan with its range of music, dance, art and culinary experiences.
This year’s event promises to build on that success, with even more for visitors to explore and enjoy. As the 8th Kurdistan Cultural Week approaches, Brussels is once again preparing to celebrate the enduring traditions and vibrant culture of the Kurdish people.
