Ibrahim al-Shuhemi, a water management official with the Kurdish-led Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor (Dêrezor), narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday, North Press reported on Monday.
According to a local source in the town of al-Jazrat, unidentified assailants fired at al-Shuhemi’s car while he was on his way home from work. “He managed to escape unharmed”, the source informed North Press.

On the same day, another attack occurred in Deir ez-Zor’s town of Abu Hamam. Unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle shot and killed an employee of a humanitarian relief organisation right outside his home.
These incidents are part of an emerging pattern in the region, in which civilians, security personnel, and AANES officials are targeted in killings often attributed to ISIS.
The attacks are becoming increasingly common despite the conclusion of an anti-ISIS operation by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in early September.
