A Kurdish journalist, Suleyman Ahmed, has been missing for five days with no information about his whereabouts or well-being, according to the Roj news agency based in Iraqi Kurdistan.
Ahmed, who works as an editor for the Arabic-language department of Roj news, had travelled to North and East Syria on 1 October to visit his family. However, on his return to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq on 25 October, he was reportedly detained by Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) security forces at the Semalka border crossing.
Ahmed’s family has called on the KDP to provide information on his fate and current status. To date, there has been no official statement from the KDP regarding his detention or the reasons for it.
The Iraqi Journalists’ Union “strongly condemned” the journalist’s detention and called on the authorities “to clarify his situation as soon as possible”.
