The Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) accused the Turkish government of neglecting repeated warnings about faulty electrical infrastructure that reportedly contributed to the rapid spread of the massive wildfire on Friday.
The wire swept through a 66-kilometre stretch between Diyarbakır’s (Amed) Çınar (Xana Axpar) district and Mardin’s (Merdin) Mazıdağı (Şemrex), claiming 11 lives and injuring 78, devastating villages and farmland. “Authorities disregarded critical concerns over infrastructure shortcomings, amplifying this catastrophe,” the KNK stated.
Demanding accountability, the KNK called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident. “This tragedy underscores the urgent need for robust infrastructure management and swift emergency response protocols,” the statement continued.
KNK emphasised the importance of solidarity with the affected families and communities, urging all Kurds and relevant organisations to mobilise resources and aid for the victims.
Heyva Sor Kurdistan (Kurdistan Red Crescent) has launched a humanitarian appeal to assist the victims of the wildfire disaster in Diyarbakır and Mardin. The organisation is actively providing medical aid and support to those injured, while also mobilising efforts to help rebuild affected communities. They emphasise the urgent need for donations to sustain their relief operations and provide essential resources to families in distress.
