A woman was injured in a Turkish aerial attack on the Makhmour (Mexmûr) Refugee Camp in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq on Friday. Ayşe Muhammed Ahmed, a 50-year-old woman was hospitalised after the attack that was executed by drones belonging to Turkey, according to RojNews.
This incident follows a similar attack on 7 October, when drones targeted a mosque within the same camp, resulting in injuries to a mother and her two children. “The drones continue to hover over Makhmour,” said a local source.
Residents of the camp have gathered outside the hospital, and a delegation of Iraqi officials has arrived at the scene to conduct an investigation.
Later in the day, residents of the camp staged a protest against Turkey’s ongoing drone attacks and the international community’s silence on the matter. Yusuf Kara, co-president of the Makhmour People’s Assembly, pointed out that the refugee camp had been targeted twice within a week, describing the attacks as “immoral”. He expressed frustration at the lack of response from Iraq and the international community, drawing parallels between their situation and the recent Israeli attacks. “We see international and neighbouring states calling on Israel not to commit massacres. However, the Iraqi state, where we are guests, neither sees nor reacts to the two attacks carried out on the Martyr Rustem Cudi Refugee Camp within a week. This is a sad situation that raises questions,” Kara said.
The ongoing drone activity over Makhmour has raised concerns among the local population and international observers alike. The attacks have drawn sharp criticism, with some pointing out the contradiction in Turkey’s stance on different international conflicts.
