Hişyar Bülbün, the brother of slain Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) representative Deniz Bülbün, is demanding immediate action and transparency from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) regarding his brother’s murder in the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). Hişyar Bülbün expressed deep concern over the lack of any official statement or arrests in connection with the murder, calling it “alarming”.
Deniz Bülbün was killed during an armed attack on the KNK offices in Erbil (Hewlêr) on 18 September 2023.
Hişyar Bülbün called for the regional government to reveal the perpetrators and share information with the public as soon as possible. “The government’s silence is unacceptable. We demand justice for Deniz and the Kurdish community,” he stated.
Cemil Bayık, co-chair of the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK), echoed these sentiments in a recent interview. Bayık emphasised the need for transparency and immediate action from the regional government, stating that the silence raises questions about its commitment to justice and security. “In Erbil, a KNK representative [Deniz Bülbün] was assassinated, but to this day, they [the KDP] haven’t made a single statement, condemned it, or arrested anyone. They’ve established such a regime in Erbil that no one can move. There are cameras everywhere. The KNK building is under surveillance every day, every hour. How can Deniz be assassinated there, and the KDP doesn’t arrest anyone? Because they are also involved in this murder,” said Bayık.
