The Kobani (Kobanê) community celebrated a significant milestone with the opening of new facilities for the University of Kobani on Sunday, marking an important development in the educational landscape of autonomous Kurdish-led North and East Syria.
The ceremony, which saw the participation of thousands of students, teachers, academics, local residents and families of those who have fallen defending Kobani against ISIS, underscored the region’s commitment to advancing higher education amid challenging circumstances.
The construction of the new campus, which began in 2018, represents a substantial investment in the future of North and East Syria’s youth and academia. Sprawling over 7,000 square metres to the south of Kobani, the university facility, costing around 1.7 million dollars, is designed to accommodate a growing student population.
The building comprises three sections dedicated to students, university administration, and includes a library and a 400-seat conference hall, alongside 30 classrooms each with a capacity of 35-40 students.
Halil Ali, co-president of Rojava Universities Coordination, and Bekir Ceradi, co-president of the Education and Teaching Board of Euphrates Canton, both delivered speeches at the event, highlighting the university’s role in the region’s educational and social development.
Since its establishment by the Autonomous Administration in 2017, Kobani University has expanded to include 12 colleges and institutes, offering a wide range of disciplines from literature and education to sciences, medicine, technology, accounting, languages, management, law and social sciences.
