Renewed hostilities have erupted in northern Syria, as Turkish occupation forces and affiliated mercenaries intensify their offensive in and around Kobani (Kobanê). Despite recent international mediation efforts and calls for de-escalation, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) report continued attacks, notably along the Tishreen Dam axis and near the Qara Qozaq Bridge. According to the SDF’s General Command, the aggression persists in defiance of attempts to “implement a ceasefire in Manbij and other regions” and to uphold international commitments to stability.
In a statement released on 19 December 2024, the SDF reaffirmed its stance on defending the city and its people, declaring, “We will not hesitate to defend our people and territories against any aggression or attack.” Emphasising the gravity of the situation and the importance of local mobilisation, the SDF further urged, “We call upon our people in Kobani to demonstrate their unwavering determination by actively participating in the resistance and taking up arms against the occupation.”

Despite mounting pressure, the SDF insists that the path to a lasting solution lies through dialogue rather than violence. Yet, in the face of ongoing artillery shelling, drone strikes, and troop movements, the SDF warns Turkish invaders that Kobani “will not be a picnic” and intends to transform every village into “an impregnable fortress of resistance.”

Local communities have already begun organising defensive measures, reflecting the SDF’s call to action. With support from international partners, the SDF hopes that stronger global censure will compel Turkey and its affiliates to halt their assaults. “We urge all concerned countries and powers to adopt a more decisive and stringent stance to halt Turkish aggression and the attacks of its mercenaries,” the SDF stated, appealing directly to Arab nations and the broader Arab community to oppose Turkey’s claims and territorial incursions.
As fears over renewed conflict mount, the resolve of Kobani’s defenders appears equally unyielding. With international observers now closely monitoring the situation, the coming days may prove pivotal in determining whether dialogue can prevail over division, and if the SDF’s call for solidarity will resonate beyond Syria’s borders.
